The airplane at left is a Waco belonging to the Sprott-Shaw School of Aviation, while the other two are Gipsy Moths operated by Dominion Airways. Joe also told us that the location is not the Vancouver Airport as we know it today, but the old Lansdowne race track, which is where the Lansdowne Shopping Centre in Richmond now stands..
HERITAGE AIRPORT HANGAR DONATED TO CMFT. SEE STORY INSIDE.
“PIONEER PROFILE” AVIATION HISTORY RECORDING ON VIDEO AND TAPES UNDERWAY. READ ON TO FIND OUT HOW TO GET INVOLVED AND ENSURE THAT WE GET THE WHOLE STORY *(Joe Bertalino)
SHOPPING CENTRE DISPLAYS
CMFT had a very successful small display at the SEMIAHMOO CENTRE IN WHITE ROCK March 13 to 16.
MAYFAIR LIFE STYLE 85, WHITE ROCK, MAY 8TH THROUGH 12TH, at Centennial Park. This will be an outdoor display, and we’ll need, help to set up and tear down and to man the booth. There will be hot air balloon rides, contests, and other family oriented events. This is the show-case for White Rock merchants. If you can help, great! If you can’t, come and visit the booth, and send or bring your friends.
RICHMOND SQUARE MALL. This has been our most successful and largest display each year. Lots of help needed. Phone in if you can help out May 26 through June 1.
DAKRIDGE MALL. Tentatively set for October. It is hoped the Camel will be ready to show by that time.
STAMPE BIPLANE TO BE EXPO’86 RESTORATION PROJECT
DAVE SMITH and JIM KNEESCH need help with the Stampe restoration they have begun in Jim’s basement in Richmond. Expo 86 want an on-site restoration for the term of the fair, with the finished product to fly at the Abbotsford Air Show or just prior to the end of Expo.
The object is that the fair visitor will be able to go through the exhibit and watch how an airplane is built through to completion. Several examples will have to be worked on concurrently, so that initial, intermediate and final stages of restoration will be displayed at all times.
Picture I.D. passes to the fair will be issued to those who put in a major commitment of time and effort to the project. There is a lot of work to be done, starting immediately. Passes will not be available to those who make only a token effort.
If you can help, please call Dave at 273-8029 or Rose at 531-3744.
Any complaints about the quality and content of this newsletter should go to Rose Zalesky, who put it together in a hurry, under pressure, as usual.

VANCOUVER ISLAND MEMBERS MEET THE LAST WEDNESDAY OF EVERY MONTH AT 7:30 P.M., AT THE BAY STREET ARMOURIES, VICTORIA. PLEASE USE THE FIELD STREET ADDRESS. ANYONE INTERESTED IS WELCOME TO ATTEND.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
APRIL 18, 1985, 8:00 P.M . at 13527 CRESCENT ROAD, SURREY.
The main business of the meeting will be to elect a new Board of Directors. It is your museum. Paid up members all have a vote. Attend in person or mail in proxy.
Nominating Committee is Barry Jackson who can be reached at 255-3825 (leave mes sage) or call Rose Zalesky at 278-9804, or 531-2465, if you want to stand for election or wish to nominate someone.
Of the total of 20 board members, 5 are permanent (Barry Jackson, Ron Stunden, Bill Thompson, Ed Zalesky, Rose Zalesky).
Two seats are reserved for Vancouver Island people, which leaves 13 seats to be filled.
Directors are elected for a one year terms and can serve no more than 3 years consecutively.
It is preferable, but not mandatory, that a member serve as Committee Head for one year before seeking election as a Director.
Director’s meetings are held the second Thursday of every month, at the storage site, at 7:30 p.m. Active participation and regular attendance is a requirement (illness or other unforseen circumstance excepted).
COMMITTEES
Operation of the museum is becoming increasingly complex and time consuming. Members are encouraged to take a hand in the operation of the museum by serving on Committees. Active committees help take pressure off the full time volunteers.
Committee heads attend directors meetings. Input is encouraged but voting privilege does not apply.
The Committees are:
- NEWSLETTER researches, collects and edIts material, with final draft to be approved by the Directors. Ability to do complete paste-ups an asset, but not mandatory. Printing is done by office staff, but collating, addressing and mailing should be handled by the committee. Lots of people are needed on this. committee, most for only one day a month.
- RECOVERY AND HAULING assist in arranging transportation of aircraft and material.”
- DEEP WATER RECOVERY – salvage and transport of recovered Items.
- SPECIAL EVENTS – includes organizing annual Open House, Fall and Spring Dinners and other displays.
- FLYING COMMITTEE – determine, with approval of Directors, flying schedules, and maintenance and crewing of airplanes.
- RESTORATION- co-ordinate volunteer involvement in restoration projects. A very important position this term as CMFT will have involvement with Expo 86.
- RESEARCH co-ordinates the research required for various projects, and processes public requests for information.
- RECORDS (Vancouver Island only)
- GIFT SHOP staff gift shop on weekends and has input into the stock carried. Hours from 11 to 3 Saturdays and Sundays. This committee will hopefully reduce the burden on the Zalesky family.
VANCOUVER’S ORIGINAL HANGAR BUILDING GIFTED TO CMFT
CMFT now has the original hangar which once stood at Vancouver’s first airport at Lansdowne (the site of the present day Lansdowne shopping centre). The hangar, presently located on Vancouver Airport South, is a gift to the Museum from Transport Canada.
It is now in the process of being dismantled for storage and later re- erection at a permanent Museum site.
If we can get permission to temporarily erect it at the storage site it will provide room for other restoration projects or storage.
Any offers of assistance to put the building up? It’s a steel truss building, with lots of wood, and shouldn’t be a big job.
SOPWITH CAMEL NEAR-REPLICA
George Neuman is heading up a three- man team and the full size scale near- replica of the Camel is rapidly coming to life. They are doing a great job and having a lot of fun at the same time. If you live near Fort Langley, where the work is being carried out and want to volunteer help, they will be pleased to have you.
Especially needed is someone who can mock up an engine for the airplane. It has to be scale and it has to look right, but it can be made from tin cans, foam, fibreglass or whatever else will work.
It should be in displayable condition for Open House.
AVIATION PIONEERS TO HAVE THEIR DAY
This lovely silhouette of a Tiger Moth was taken by Gordon Peters. The Tiger Moth and other old airplanes are part of the history we are recording through personal interviews with our aviation pioneers. We need photos and stories. Please get in touch if you can help identify people we should interview, if you have photos or a story to tell.
A reception area will be set aside at Open. House where these people can meet each other and the public. Publicity will be arranged if there is sufficient interest.
“PIONEER PROFILES” PROJECT
The museum has been researching material for production of audio and video tapes on our aviation pioneers, with the production of a book as an additional end product.
The Employment Development Branch of Canada Manpower has provided the funding for three people for six months, while some of the video equipment has been purchased with a grant from the Ninety-Nines Award In Aviation Award program. A donation from Barry Jackson will go towards the purchase of more equipment, but we will still need a few things such as a fairly good quality reel-to-reel tape recorder, and while a mini recording studio would be nice, as would a video editor, we are prepared to get along with very much less.
We would appreciate any advice or suggestions as to how to do it well but reasonably, as well as suggestions on where to buy the equipment, or perhaps a loan can be arranged.
Although our camera operates in very low light conditions, there is the odd time that lights are needed. Any offers of the loan of donation of lighting?
We also need lots of VHS video tapes and tapes for standard small tape recorders as well as for the reel-to-reel if we are fortunate enough to get one.
SAMPSON V WORKING SCALE MODEL
THE VALLEY MODEL BOAT CLUB has generously offered to build a working scale model of the Sampson V, the Fraser River snag boat, complete with two operating steam engines, for the CMFT.
They will undertake the operation and maintenance of the model, and will show it at major modelling events throughout the year, but it will be the property of the CMFT.
It is expected to be displayed at Expo 86. If model building is your forte, and you want to get involved in this interesting project, call Larry Coonce at 534-3782 or Robert Wormald at 536-5338 for details of membership.
OPEN HOUSE ’85 DATE SET
JUNE 22 AND 23 ARE “OPEN HOUSE” DAYS. Work is well underway, but lots of help needed to ensure another successful event. Please offer your help, or if you can’t be sure to attend and pass the word around.
SUNDAY HELP NEEDED
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO STAFF THE GIFT SHOP ON SUNDAYS. (11 to 3). Very easy work and you’ll meet lots of great people.
