CANADIAN MUSEUM OF FLIGHT AND TRANSPORTATION MARCH 15, 1986 MINI-NEWSLETTER

Photo: Some of the models which the Northwest Territories Pavillion had contracted with CMFT to build as they are delivered to the Expo site. Most of the models were contracted out to individuals (who did an excellent job), while the rest were done in the CMFT shop by the dedicated volunteers who worked many late. hours to get them finished by the deadline, and still managed to make them look great despite many set-backs and unforseen circumstances.

NEWS:

SITE OPENING DELAYED:

The Storage Site will be unable to open for tours till April 5th. Although we usually open March 15th, the site is still too wet and muddy to allow visitors. Also, due to the models and Lysander for Expo taking up everyone’s time and effort, we have been unable to set up any of the aircraft for display at this time.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR SITE SET-UP:

Starting immediately, many volunteers are needed to help set-up the aircraft and generally get the site ready for the openIng on April 5th. Even if you aren’t comfortable with the aircraft, we still need help with landscaping and other stuff, so please come out if you can. We work daily starting at 9:00, 7 days a week, so any time you can come out we would appreciate your help. The bigger the crew the better, so try for Saturdays to get the most work done.

HELP NEEDED FOR GIFT SHOP INVENTORY:

Its time for our yearly inventory of the gift shop before ordering for the coming season. It’s time consuming and nitpicking, but we really need help. If you are not keen on working outside but still want to help, please come out.

OPEN HOUSE SHAPING UP TO BE A BIG ONE!:

This summer’s Open House, June 21 & 22, is beginning to look like quite the show. Besides the usual (and great) displays from all the associated clubs, there should be several new groups with displays, including some excellent antique automobiles from the Bellingham area. We are starting a list of volunteers now, so if you think you’ll be able to help, please let us know. The only reason last year’s event went so well is that it was the first time we had 80 volunteers helping out. Lets try to have it go as smoothly again this year. The number of visitors expected because of Expo is tremendous, so this is the best opportunity to showcase CMFT we will get all year.

TOUR GUIDES NEEDED:

We desperately need tour guides for the April 5th opening, and every day after that. Hours are 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM daily. It a very interesting job, and you don’t have to know everything, just come out a couple of times before hand and take a tour with one of the experienced guides to get the idea. We give you an information sheet to help you along, and there is always someone here to answer any questions. If the interest is great enough, we will run a short (2 hour) course for all new tour guides (and for the semi-experienced ones if you want to learn more). Please come out and help as we are always short of tour guides. Phone and let us know what days you can be here so we can plan ahead, or if you are interested in taking the course.

FABRIC SEMINAR:

As you may already know, the fabric seminar has been temporarily stalled due to the models and Lysander in the shop. The models are now finished and the Lysander is due to be moved shortly, so the fabric work will continue in early April. This is a very informative, hands-on course, and for the price ($40.00) the value is tremendous. Phone and book a space, and we will advise when we will be ready to start again.

CORRECTION:

In the last newsletter we reported that a model of the Hindenburg Airship had been donated by Walt Winberg. Walt has informed us that it is in fact a L11 Zeppelin. Sorry for the mix-up, and thank you for sending the plans for it Walt!

STRANRAER PRINT:

We still have lots of copies of Graham Wragg’s print of Stranraer CF-BYJ, RCAF 915 over Lion’s Gate Bridge, c1940. This beautiful print is on high quality 100 lb. matte bond, and each Is signed by the artist. Price is $15.00 each, plus $3.00 postage and packing, or you can pick up a copy at the gift shop. We also have greeting cards with the same print (blank inside) in sets of 6, with envelopes, for $2.95.
