CANADIAN MUSEUM OF FLIGHT AND TRANSPORTATION MINI NEWSLETTER MAY 14, 83
This newsletter is being sent out to members in an attempt to keep you better informed of museum happenings and events. Do not fear, the regular (quarterly) newsletter/magazine will eventually reach you. It’s in the works, with publication scheduled for about the first week in June. We hope to send you this “Mini” letter every month that there is no regular letter, or if something special comes up.
MOSQUITO SHOWING
Members and guests are invited to view the progress of the Mosquito restoration. The work is going on a full-time basis, and the mechanics do not have the time or the authority to show people around on a drop- in basis, so PLEASE restrict your visit to the OPEN HOUSE SHOWING that has been arranged for that purpose. Volunteers will be on hand to answer questions, and the coffee pot will be on.
MOSQUITO OPEN HOUSE SHOWING ONE DAY ONLY 10:00 AM 2:00 PM SATURDAY, MAY 28, 1983
Take 401B to the Mt. Lehman (Abbotsord Airport) Exit. Proceed NORTH on Mt. Lehman Rd about 3 miles to Hawkins Road and turn right. Turn right again on to Olund. Go South mile, past the helicopter on the lawn of the log house to a silver coloured plywood building. That’s it. Again – we repeat. NO DROP-IN VISITS, PLEASE.
NEXT GENERAL MEETING
THURSDAY, JUNE 16, 1983 AT 8:00 P.M. AT THE STORAGE SITE, 13527 CRESCENT ROAD, SURREY
WORK BEES EVERY SATURDAY AND SUNDAY FROM 10 AM to 3 PM
Every Saturday and Sunday is a work bee day unless posted otherwise. Turnouts have been dismal, but there is a great deal of work to be done. The yard is in need of clean-up, the storage sheds need organizing, a door needs to be hung in one of the buildings, fire extinguishers need to be installed, shelves to be built, airplanes for the Mall Display need to be patched, washed and shined up. And of course, the usual library work, and many tapes to be transcribed for those who prefer clerical work.
1983 OPEN HOUSE, JUNE 26, 1983
VINTAGE CAR DISPLAYS
A bigger and better Open House is well into the planning stage. Arrangements have been made with the Vintage Car Club to make it a Rallye point, and they expect from 50 100 cars to attend. They will be given a grass area to display their cars and talk about them to anyone interested. The Bellingham Car Club has been invited to attend also.
ULTRA-LIGHT AIRCRAFT DISPLAYS
A number of different Ultra-lights will be on display the entire day. Local sales firms will have their aircraft on display thrughout the day, so if you’re interested in this terrific new sport, come out and talk to the people who know them.
FUN CONTESTS FOR THE KIDS, BIG AND SMALL
Model airplane contest for kids, paper airplane flying contest, others.
WWI FIGHTER SKIT
The now-famous Red Baron skit will be performed (twice)
FOOD ALL DAY
Food will be served all day. Hamburgers, meat pies, french fries, and other good stuff from 11 AM to 3:30, and a Do-it-Yourself Barbecue at under $5. with dessert (probably chicken or ground steak) in the eve.
AIRPLANES ON DISPLAY, OTHER ARTIFACTS FLY-PAST
As many as possible of the airplanes will be tidied up and assembled for the day, and tours will be hosted every half-hour. There will be a fly-by of the flying airplanes (Fleet, Waco, SE5, Tiger). Dave Jones will M.C. again, but this time with a schedule and better equipment.
YARD SALE, BAKED GOODS SALE
The yard sale will be repeated this year. SO START SAVING YOUR YARD SALE ITEMS NOW. CALL US AND WE’LL ARRANGE FOR PICKUP ANY TIME. Baked goods can come the day of the event, but the yard sale items must be here ahead of time as it is a lot of work to get the sale set up. Or, bring your stuff out to the storage site if you can.
FANTASY AND SERVICES AUCTION
We’re also going to hold a Fantasy and Services Auction (if we can get enough co-operation). Members can help by offering services that bidders want. For example, those of you who own airplanes can offer to give a half-hour ride, or an hour, if you wish, or a seat of a trip to a further destination. Or, if you’re a 4-wheeler offer to take along the top bidder on your next weekend trip. If you have a boat, offer to take two people fishing for a day. Or, a weekend at your summer cabin, or three haircuts if you’re a barber or hairdresser, or a tooth filled if you’re a dentist. If you can’t do any of these things, offer to wash a car, cut grass, loan a camper, 10 hours typing, clean the garage, let your imagination run. There are hundreds of services, large and small, that you can share at very little or no cost to yourself, but that people will bid on. All proceeds go to CMPT, a non-profit Society, so you should not be violating any rules. People will bid what they feel the service is worth to them. You will meet new people and the money raised will be used to help CMFT grow. Check with your friends and the people and businesses in your community. They may want to help out in this novel and inexpensive way. Phone in your pledge of service, or drop us a note. We need it soon, so that we can work out advertising and such.
MAGAZINE SWAP AND SALE, GIFT SHOP
There will, as usual, be a magazine swap amongst members at the Open House, after which extra copies from the Library will go on sale. The Gift Shop will be open all day. Lots of new and many new (old) books no longer in print are on hand. Come in an browse on that or any of the tour weekend days. Lots of “neat stuff” in the gift shop, including posters (beautiful new ones on the way), airplane lapel pins, cards, tee shirts.
PEOPLE POWER
All of these events take people power to put in place. The two weekends workbees prior to the event (June 14th and 15th and June 21 & 22n) will be devoted to setting up exhibits, getting the kitchen organized, parking, signs, tours, security and all the other chores necessary to make the affair go smoothly. There are jobs for every one, especially on the big day itself, and lots of people are needed. Please offer your help. Phone in and confirm what you will do and when.
RICHMOND SQUARE MALL DISPLAY MAY 30th JUNE 4th
CMPT is displaying the Tiger Moth that the apprentice mechanics have built up, as well as several other items from our collection. The usual gift items will be offered, but again, we ask for your support. If you can spend a half-day, a day, or more, please phone in. We need several people for each shift as the display will be the largest yet. Each shift will have someone who is knowledgeable of Museum history and we also need people to do the selling of goods. Not difficult and everything is well marked and priced. Phone Rose at 531-2465 or 278-9804.
RESTORATION PROJECTS
TIGER MOTH, BOLINGBROKE, CORNELL, VAMPIRE, TARGET DRONE, POU DE CIEL All of these projects (with the exception of the Tiger Moth which is being funded by a Community Recovery Project grant in part)- are at a standstill. Most of you who offered to help haven’t shown up. If you would like to help, phone and make your offer, and then follow through by turning up. Harry Fordham and Bill McGarrigle have been volunteering their time almost on a full time basis since early December. Wemer Griesbeck has been here many days doing the paint work on the Tiger. A few others came for a short time but had to leave because of job commitments, but there are hundreds of you on U.I.C. out there, as well as other retirees…why not spend a few hours a day, or a week here, and in the process perhaps learn something new or pass on your knowledge to someone else. The Tiger has to fly by Open House day if possible, or for Abbotsford Air Show at the latest, and there is till lots to be done, for example. There is also. the very real sense of pride to be gained by seeing a historic airplane emerge from a pile of parts and materials through your own effort. Give it a try! You might like it! And, it will help CMFT achieve its goals.
SATURDAY AND SUNDAY TOURS EVERY SUMMER WEEKEND 11 AM 3 PM AT THE STORAGE SITE
Because of demand, we are inviting people to visit the storage site on Saturdays and Sundays between 11 AM and 3 PM. You are welcome to visit and bring your friends, or simply direct people here. The address is 13527 Crescent Road, Surrey. Take the Crescent Beach Exit off 99 or 99A and proceed 1 miles towards the beach.
Tour guides are needed to help out, as all visits are personally conducted no wandering around without a guide. Please phone Wayne Manning at 943-4591 or Rose at 278-9804 to offer your help.
ANNUAL C.A.P.A. CONFERENCE JULY 21, 22, 23
CMFT is hosting the 1983 Canadian Aeronautical Association conference in July. CAPA is the umbrella for all Canadian aviation museums, including the National Collection. The itinerary includes an evening gettogether July 21, working meetings on the 22nd with a tour of the storage site in the afternoon and a barbecue in the evening. Saturday calls for a visit to the Pacific Museum of Flight in Seattle and perhaps a Boeing plant tour. Again, if you are able to help with arranging travel, accommodation for delegates, food preparation and serving, clean up and such, please phone Rose at 531-2465 or 278-9804.
DO YOU REALIZE THAT IF EACH MEMBER BROUGHT IN JUST ONE NEW MEMBER, WE WOULD HAVE 1400 MEMBERS? LET’S GIVE IT A TRY.
WANTS AND NEEDS DEPARTMENT
TYPEWRITER CMPT desperately needs a good typewriter. We’ve worn out all of Rose’s old relics and while a couple were loaned they have either had to be returned or soon will be. Surely there is an unused one out there???
COMPUTER We are looking to buy another computer. The museum computer proved to be too small to handle the work and was sold. The money is in a term deposit in the hope that more can be found to purchase one of the new, high capacity micro computers or an older mini.
HANDS-ON COMPUTER CENTRE We are also looking for TRS80’s, APPLES, PETS, or any of the older home computers to set up as a hands-on attraction for kits; and a programmers to set up appropriate programs or ? The Seattle Science Centre has a roomful of them which kids line up to use at a small hourly rental fee. A much better investment than sending the kids off to the Arcade
PUBLIC ADDRESS SYSTEM We also need a P.A. system, either as a loan for Open House, as a gift, or as a permanent loan.
SHOP AND HAND TOOLS We are pleased to acknowledge the donation of several table saws and the loan of some tools, including a compressor. But, we still need more shop equipment. Has anyone a router that isn’t working how about an oscillating sander? Or, any kind of hand power tools? A small lathe? Com-Alongs and Turfers? Chain saw? We can give a tax-deductible receipt for the value of the item, or might be able to come up with cash for the purchase if the price is right.
VIDEO CAMERA To record events and recovery trips.
NEXT GENERAL MEETING – JUNE 16, 1983 – 8PM
This will be the last meeting from the summer, with the next meeting after that on Sept. 15th. Meetings are now held in the shop, where you can see the work that is in progress. Business sessions are being cut shorter to allow time to meet and talk to each other. There will be a film or slideshow or a speaker, and of course the coffee pot is on all through the meeting.
RECOVERY TRIPS SCHEDULED
A recovery trip is on for May 21 to about the 26th to pick up an old airplane near Prince Rupert, and Bill Thompson is leaving June 4th with his towboat and barge for an up-coast pickup. Anyone wanting to go to work phone Rose, or Bill Thompson at 883-2445 (Pender Harbour) to see if any space is left for workers. No tourists, please.
YOU’D LIKE TO HELP BUT CAN’T? YOUR MEMBERSHIP IS YOUR VALUED SUPPORT. PLEASE KEEP IT VALID AS YOUR VERY REAL CONTRIBUTION.
CHECK YOUR ADDRESS LABEL. THE DATE IS THE EXPIRY DATE OF YOUR MEMBERSHIP. CHECK IT PLEASE
ABBOTS FORD AIR SHOW, AUG. 12, 13, 14
Posters, tee shirt, cards and dozens of other sale items will soon be arriving, all of which need either pricing, rolling, folding and counting. This work can be done well in advance, and we sure would like some help with it this year. It takes a great deal of time, and its not hard to do. Please offer your help. We also need help on Air Show days and all during the week prior to set up the displays, clean, polish and move airplanes around and of course, the help in manning the booths, and taking it all apart again at the end of the display. We’ll be reminding you again, as the time gets closer. We are also considering taking a small informational display to the Annual NORTHWEST EAA FLY- IN, August 26, 27, 28th, at the BAYVIEW, WASH, (Mt. Vernon) airport. (This is the one that used to be held at Arlington, Wash).
MILITARY MUSEUMS CONFERENCE
CMFT will be one of the participants in the program, with a slide presentation. Conference will be held in Victoria July 25 30th.
HELICOPTER JOINS MUSEUM DURING P.V.I. OPEN HOUSE
On Sunday, June 12, the Pacific Vocational School will hold an Open House at their Sea Island (Vancouver Airport) Campus. On that day the museum will be presented with a completely restored former Royal Canadian Navy Helicopter.
The Piasecki HUP-3 helicopter was used for a decade by the Navy until 1964. Aircraft No. 621 joined the B.C. Vocational School in 1965 and since that time has been used to train hundreds of aircraft mechanics. At the Open House the aircraft will be run up and probably displayed alongside military aircraft from VU-33 at Comox, the HUP’s former operators.
Come out to P.V.I. and see the school’s facilities, and to see the latest addition to CMFT’s collection. STARTS AT 10:00 A.M.
ONCE AGAIN: NEXT GENERAL MEETING IS JUNE 16, 8 PM 13527 Crescent Road, Surrey, B.C. 531-2465
