SUBSTITUTE EDITOR

Newsletter editor Brad Thomas is away at present, but plans to produce the regular newsletter, containing news of events at the museum, lots of photos, letters and stories as usual. Projected date is mid-January.

HOMESITE PROBLEM

In the meantime, this “MINI” is to bring you up to date on the homesite problem, which still looms large. President George Proulx, Barry Jackson, and Jerry Vernon (the Museum’s representative to the BC Aviation Council) have met with the BC Aviation Council, who are also working on our behalf on possible homesites. One or two of the potential sites are very promising, but in each instance, the Museum must raise the seed money to secure the site and to either upgrade existing buildings and/or build new structures. Please see “FROM THE DESK OF THE INTERIM MANAGER” page 3 for more details

CHRISTMAS CATALOGUE

The Museum’s gift shop/ book store is second to none in the variety and selection of aviation related items. It is a perfect place to shop for gifts or books for your friends or just to please yourself or build your aviation library During the winter months, the store is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 – 4 for personal shopping, but someone will take your telephone or fax order (Visa or Mastercard) any day. There is also still time to order by mail. Check the order form for instructions.

May all enjoy A very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

FROM THE DESK OF INTERIM MANAGER LORI COCKERILL (And John Reid) HOMESITE CHALLENGE FUND STILL FAR SHORT OF $200,000 GOAL

A very special thank you to the members and friends who accepted the challenge to donate to the Homesite Challenge Fund. It now stands at $35,000, but unless many more small donations or a few large ones come in, it will not succeed. There has been a misunderstanding with regards to this challenge. Homesite donations do not have to be the full $2000. We will happily accept any amount you can offer. The challenge was merely worded in such a manner to illustrate how a few individuals can make a significant difference to our goal. Please, if you are thinking about it, but have yet to send in your money or a pledge, do it now. There is no risk – if we don’t get enough money for the stated purpose, your money is returned after January 1, 1995 as soon as we can get it out. If the challenge is met, you get a Tax Deductible Receipt for a 1994 donation.

INSIDE/OUTSIDE HELP REQUIRED

We realize that all of you have lives apart from the museum and many of you are swamped with work each day. The work continues at the museum as well, and without funds to hire adequate help it can only get done if we get a commitment of regular volunteer time. Don’t panic over the word commitment, by this all I mean is that when you say you’ll be here every Wednesday afternoon, we just expect you to show up, that’s all! We certainly do not expect a commitment of three days per week although that would be great, one day or even several hours is better than nothing! What happens when you commit your time is that we will teach you a task and then we hope that you will enjoy it enough to continue it on a regular basis. The most important thing that you as a volunteer can offer us is Regularly Scheduled time, as this will enable us to ⚫ plan and carry out the work that needs to be done. We have several volunteers who help on a regular basis. It is those people who really make the difference.

It is recognized that, over the years, some of you have felt frustrated in your efforts to help the museum, but we are at a critical stage in the life of the organization. A renewed effort by all is essential for continuation and an improved future for the museum. I realize you may receive little encouragement and little apparent reward but please do not think that your help is not noticed. It is noticed and it is very urgently needed and APPRECIATED!!

We need people to help in the office as well as with the preparations to move to a new homesite. There is a wide range of knowledge and expertise in our membership and we would like to be able to draw on this, cerebrally if not physically or perhaps you may know someone outside the membership whose input would be of value to us. Please encourage them to participate. The urgency of our situation cannot be overstated. Unless we find an alternative site and obtain a temporary reprieve from the City of Surrey, we must vacate by June 30, 1995. Just seven short months away!

SHORT TERM FULL TIME STAFF APPROVED

Beginning in mid-December, we will have two new crew in the office and gift shop for a total of 14 weeks under a job creation grant. One will work in the gift shop learning our computerized inventory management and point of sale system; the other will tackle promotion and fund-raising. Both will help John Reid and Margaret Giacomello with their duties.

We still need a part time (several hours every weekday) manager trainee to replace Lori Cockerill who will be leaving in January.

Martin Kluftinger & Associates Financial Planning Services

400-601 West Broadway, Vancouver, BC V5Z 4C2 Telephone (604) 874-7704/Fax (604) 876-2696

Dear Aviation Enthusiast,

Wouldn’t you welcome the chance to do something beneficial for yourself while at the same time supporting a good cause?

Here is an opportunity to plan for your own financial success and support the Canadian Museum of Flight and Transportation in its efforts to raise funds. You may be aware that the Museum must find an alternate site and that requires plenty of donations. As a pilot I want to see the Museum survive; as a financial advisor I help people plan for their financial success. By combining the two, I offer the following solution:

My associate and I will host a special financial planning seminar to supporters like yourself, and donate all the proceeds to the Museum. We teach the seminar at the Kwantlen College on a regular basis; it is a three session course that is purely generic, educational and a lot of fun. Best of all it is only $60.00 per couple, and that includes a workbook! The Museum will receive 100% of that. Since our classes average 20 couples, we should be able to raise $1,200.00. If sufficient interest exists, I would be willing to run additional seminars.

Enclosed is a short description of the course. It will be held at Kwantlen College (Langley Campus) for three consecutive sessions starting Saturday, January 14, 1995 at 9:00 AM. I am sure you see the benefit for yourself and the Museum. So don’t delay! Call myself or Kate at 879-6662. Registration closes Jan 11, 1994

Sincerely, Martin Kluftinger

FINANCIAL PLANNING SEMINAR BENEFITS MUSEUM

We thank member and exhibitor Martin Kluftinger (Martin is one of the people who generously provides aerobatic displays for our special events), for responding to the Museum’s need for funds. Martin has kindly made the above offer as a way to help raise funds for the HOMESITE TRUST FUND. Please read enclosure describing the “Successful Money Management” seminar, and allow Martin to enable you to help the museum.

We welcome any other constructive suggestions and ideas for increasing the Homesite Trust fund which got off to a great start with a total of $35,000 raised to date, but is still a long way from meeting the $200,000 goal set for December 31, 1994.

WANTS AND NEEDS

A special thank you to those who responded to previous requests for needed items. Some of the items listed below are familiar from prior requests, while others are new. Donations preferred but quote if you cannot donate:

  • GASOLINE POWERED PRESSURE WASHER. We have a near new electric one to swap or sell.
  • SHIPPING CONTAINERS. Have some but need more 20 foot and 40 foot containers to facilitate move.
  • FORK LIFT. A 3,000 lb. capacity pneumatic tired forklift would be nice, but we’ll settle for less (or better). Urgently needed.
  • SMALL 10-15HP GARDEN TRACTOR
  • PORTABLE GAS DRIVEN ARC WELDER
  • AIR DRIVEN OR ELECTRIC POLISHER/ BUFFER
  • AND USE OF FLAT BED TRAILERS AND RIGS TO HAUL THEM, HIABS AND STINGER TRUCK CRANES, TRUCKS OF ALL SIZES AND OTHER MOVING EQUIPMENT.

We are lining up this equipment now, so that when the time comes to make the actual move (still June 30/95 as of this printing), we will be ready to go

Please offer your help or pass on information as to who might be able to provide the equipment (loan or reasonable rental).

PACKING UP PROGRESSING

In the meantime smaller items and some airplane projects are being packed into containers. Some of the airplanes which were on display have been dismantled stored in #1 and #2 buildings

There is still plenty to do, and Saturday is packing up day. Please offer your help. We may hire one person to work on a daily basis if funds can be found to pay.
