Senator Gerry St. Germain P.C., and Museum President Terry Wadhams cut the official ribbon to unveil the new displays making up the Aviation Heritage 2000 Project.

Aviation Heritage 2000 Project – From Dream to Reality

You will have noticed in the newsletters over the past year references being made to Millennium projects. We have now completed all but one project that has had an extension granted. The six phases of Aviation Heritage were;

  • 1) Pave and landscape outdoor courtyard
  • 2) Signage
  • 3) Millennium Kids Room
  • 4) Resurface the Hangar Floor
  • 5) Display Upgrade
  • 6) WACO Cabin to airworthy condition (project extended)

On Saturday March 31, 2001 the Museum Aviation Heritage 2000 Project was officially unveiled by a ribbon cutting ceremony. Honoured guests at the event included Senator Gerry St. Germain P.C., Langley-Abbotsford MP Randy White, Township Mayor Kurt Alberts, City Deputy Mayor Ted Schaffer, Airport Manager George Miller and several Councilors from the City and Township. There were also messages read from the Honourable Herb Gray, Deputy Prime Minister and by Langley MLA, Ms. Lynn Stephens.

About 150 invited guests and volunteers were in attendance and spirits were bright even though the weather was not. Fortunately there was a large tent on the apron outside the Museum for guests to stay dry and enjoy the refreshments served after the ceremonies.

The Government of Canada proudly supported the Aviation Heritage 2000 Project with a partial financial contribution of up to a maximum of $81,600 through the Canada Millennium Partnership Program. This program contributed up to one third of eligible project costs, while the private sector and other organizations provided the remaining funding. We were allowed under the program to put a dollar value on volunteer labour so we contributed one third to ourselves. Just a note about volunteer hours, did you know that over the past year, 47 volunteers have logged in over 16,400 hours of time, and we know that number is low because some people forget to record their hours.

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Museum of Flight, a very special thank you to everyone who participated in making this dream a reality.

VOLUNTEER OF THE QUARTER

We are very pleased to introduce this editions Volunteer of the Quarter. Sandy Wells came to the Museum in the spring of 2000 after reading a newspaper article where it was mentioned we needed volunteers in the Gift Shop. Instantly she was a welcomed addition to the Museum with only one problem, we now had two “Sandy’s” in the Gift Shop. Over the course of the month we tried everything…..from Sandy to Sandra but it still was confusing to most, and so we came up with a solution, Sandy Tinsley would be Sandy-1 and Sandy Wells would be Sandy-2. Sandy-2 was invaluable in December and January during Sandy-1’s absence and kept the Gift Shop organized and running smoothly. A special thank you and congratulations to Sandy-2, the place just would not be the same with out you!
