The 1910 Gibson ‘quadruple plane’

powered by the ‘2-eyele’ 6-cylinder engine which was built by Mr. Gibson.

William Wallace Gibson And his quadruple plane With counter rotating blades Victoria, B. C. September, 1910

These are the days when one made a quarter mile flight, then spent over a month repairing and improving, and then made a half mile flight and so on. Now we can fly ten thousand miles without a stop. The evolution of flight in less than five decades

This six-cylinder air-cooled two-cycle engine was built by W. W. Gibson for his aeroplane in Victoria, B. C. Canada in 1909., and was the first two-cycle six cylinder air cooled engine built in America, and the first aviation engine built in Canada. It is now in the National Museum,

Our thanks toMrs. June Hanson of Richmond who’s paternal Grandfather’s brother was William Wallace Gibson.

From the President…

At the Board of Director’s Meeting on June 17 of this year, a Committee comprised of the current President, Vice-President and Treasurer of the present Board and two other board members was named to ensure the financial health of our Museum. With this assured, it is hoped that we may all look forward to the continued preservation and restoration, where possible, of our collection. Such restored aircraft will require additional display space and protection from the elements. So our plans must include a new building. This brings us back to the matter of assured financial health and all sources of revenue will be explored.

Those on the Committee are; Terry Wadhams, Werner Greisbeck, Ron Krywiak Mike Davenport and Doug Schwam

Terry Wadhams, President

MISSION STATEMENT. “The Mission of the Canadian Museum of Flight is to tell the fascinating story of aviation by collecting, restoring and preserving aircraft and artifacts”

EDITORIAL

by Gogi Goguillot

During the protracted move from Crescent Road to our new site on the Langley Airport, visitors and tours dwindled to almost zero. As well we were completely closed for some time which reduced visits and gift shop sales to zero. The worst and most serious circumstance however, was the fact that membership renewals dwindled to nearly nothing from about 1700 to 150 during and after the move So-a loss of $ 5,000 approx. plus the potential services of 1500 volunteers. All in all circumstances we can ill afford.

So What to do? The obvious is to contact and sell the ex-member to rejoin. First letter campaign brought in an amazing 92 renewals. Two months later letters sent to ex-members further back in time realized 55 renewals and the most recent (current) effort has so far only garnered five replies. So with a little effort we enticed 152 ex-members to rejoin,-Good start, but a far cry from 1700!

Putting together this newsletter (as temporary Editor) always raises the question – “Why did these people join in the first place?” What do they want us to do in return? For your dollars you get a Quarterly Newsletter, so you can stay abreast of Museum happenings, discounts in the Gift Shop, Dinner meetings every few months. Some of you, happily, volunteer to help with clerical, Mechanical and social activities. Some of you take advantage of all possibilities, some take advantage of none, which is of course your right. Are those of you who don’t get involved too busy? or are activities of little or no interest? What would you like to become involved in?

The year 2003 commemorates the flight by the Wright Brothers, closer to home Year 2009 saw the first in Canada, the Silver Dart, February 23, 1909 How about displays, replicas, Models, Who could be involved? Who wants to be involved? Should we be involved?

Work here, work at home, alone or with help or are we missing something? Maybe not enough interest or are we not doing the right thing?

Any ideas? write E-Mail- Phone – Help us get you involved.

Volunteer of the Month Congratulations, Milt!

Milt receiving an “Electric Hammer” from the Easter Bunny at the Annual General Meeting in April.

A new feature of our newsletter is our “Volunteer of the Quarter will be selecting a volunteer quarterly and that person will be hilited in our newsletter, along with receiving complimentary dinner for two. This edition’s winner is Milt Lake, Milt is a ‘behind the scenes’ type of person and many of you may not recognize his face, but you recognize his work. He is our resident carpenter along with “Mr. Fix-it.” If there is a job to be done, all you have to do is mention it and before you know it, Milt has completed it. When we mentioned that we would like to make the washroom smaller to utilize the extra space, Milt went right to work. Two weeks later, it was complete. His talents don’t stop there, he is also the person responsible for the new showcases in the hangar, along with the newly cleaned and painted DC-3 Atco building. From all of us at the Museum, we would like to sincerely thank Milt for all his dedication and hard work. The place would not be the same without him!

Planned Giving- A Better Way

by Doug Schwann

Do you wish to make your contribution to a charitable organization (such as the Canadian Museum of Flight) much more effective? Are you interested in saving some as as well? Using life insurance as a vehicle to fund the donation may be the right vehicle for you. Here’s how

  1. Determine how much you wish to contribute.
  2. Apply and be approved for life insurance
  3. Receive a tax receipt for insurance payments.
  4. Your charity receives a tax-free endowment on your death.

Let’s look at a case study,

Mr. Ima Pilote is 45 years of age, eams enough to be in the top tax bracket, and wants to have his charity (the Museum) receive $ 50,000 when he dies. He applies and is approved for a life insurance policy, naming the Canadian Museum of Flight as the owner of the policy. Ima pays the life insurance cost (the premiums). Let’s assume the policy is paid for in 6 years, and that the annual premium is $ 1,600.

Since life insurance premiums are tax deductible, Ims will receive an approximate tax of $ 720 per year. This effectively reduces his “real” cost from $1,600 to 5 880. This is how it looks over the 6 year period to fully fund the insurance-based donation to the Museum (or any other charity):

  • Total premium cost. 6,000
  • Total approx. tax deductions 4.320
  • Total after-tax cost of donation. 5,280
  • Future benefit to Museum 50,000

In the final analysis, this could make a lot more sense than Ima donating $ 50,000 cash since his after-tax cost is only slightly more than 10% of the donated amount. Please contact Gogi at (604) 532-0035 at the Museum or Doug Schwann at (604) 43-2822 for further information. Doug Schwann is a member and Director of the Canadian Museum of Flight, a pilot and long-time aviation enthusiast, and a registered Investment Adviser with Levesque Securities in Vancouver.

Good Luck, Guys!

Antique Plane Ride won by George Cummings of Langley

The lucky winner of the “Antique Plane Ride” draw at the Willowbrook Mall on June 8, 1999 was Mr. George Cummings who resides in Langley out on Hitching Post Crescent.

Congratulations George!!!

Try these on for size…. PILOTS

  1. Rule #1: No matter what happens, fly the airplane. Forget all that stuff about thrust and drag, lift and gravity; an airplane flies because of money
  2. Don’t drop the airplane in order to fly the microphone. An airplane flies because of a principle discovered by Bernoulli, not Marconi
  3. If you push the stick forward the houses get bigger, if you pull the stick back they get smaller
  4. You know you’ve landed with the wheels up when it takes full power to taxi

CMF Museum Marketing Report by Sandy Tinsley

The past few weeks have been very busy for the volunteers at the museum.

On May 24th. five airplanes including the Fleet Finch, WACO INF, and SESa opened the 77th. Annual Fort Langley May Day Parade and Celebrations. Thanks to the many volunteers who spent time getting a float prepared for the parade, the Museum’s entry took First Place in the Organization category.

On May 28th. the Sopwith Camel replica was moved into the Willowbrook Mall for a week-long display in conjunction with the Langley Flying School. This display was manned by our volunteers daily and was a wonderful experience for everyone involved. Not only did many people come over to ask questions about the Museum, we were pleased to sign up new members as well. Fort Langley was not the end of our parades, we also participated in the Hyak Festival Parade in New Westminster. Aldergrove Days and Langley Days where we were very pleased to win 3rd. Place in our category Over the course of those four parades, the Canadian Museum of Flight was seen by an estimated 60.000 people with close to 6,000 brochures handed out along the parade route inviting people to come and visit us.

June 13th, was very busy day for our volunteer John Clark morning he moved the Camel into the New Westminster Armories for the Annual Inspection Ceremonies of the $13 Hornet Cadet Squadron. In the afternoon, he moved it out of the Armories and then into Richmond Centre Mall. Once again our dedicated core of volunteers were taken from their restoration Sandy projects to staff the display at Richmond Centre. A very special “Thank You” to all who gave their time.

June 20th. the Museum had a Father’s Day special where Dad got in free. The day proved to be a success considering it rained the entire day. We look forward to next veur and improving on the idea with maybe having a pancake breakfast to start the day off. In my discussions with the Malls over the past few weeks. I have found out that as a nonprofit organization we can set up a display booth and sell items from our gift shop. This could be a source of revenue to the Museum over the winter months, but we cannot do it Sunday using the same small core of volunteers. Do you have a few hours in a week that you would be able to give to go to a mall that is located near you? if so, give the Museum a call and we will put your name down on the list. Museum Phone Number is; $32-0035 Upcoming events that the Museum will be participating in;

June 30-July 1 Langley Canada Days Langley Airport
August 6-8 Abbotsford Air Show
August 13-21 Cottonwood Mall Chilliwack
