THE MUSEUM NEWSLETTER is published quarterly by the Canadian Museum of Flight and Transportation, 13527 Crescent Road, Surrey, B.C., V4A 2W1, phone 531-2465. The reluctant editor is Rose Zalesky, at whom any bricks and bouquets are to be directed.

THE “MINI” NEWSLETTER (this is a “mini”) is published in the months when a regular newsletter is not printed, and is distributed to members only.

NEXT NEWSLETTER

Will go to press about Sept. 15th. Please send in articles or items of interest, letters to the editor, original cartoons, or ideas of what you would like to see in the newsletter. Don’t worry if your offer- ing isn’t a polished literary accomplish- ment, and it need not be typed, but we do have to be able to read it. We’ll edit.

BCRIC SHARES DONATION PROGRAM

In response to our request that members and interested friends turn over their 5 free BCRIC shares to CMFT in the hope that they may someday increase in value, many people have mentioned that this was indeed a great way to help the Museum at no cost to the donor. The problem is that only one person has so far turned in their certif- icate. Dig them up and send them in!

CANADA WORKS PROJECTS

Some of the projects are finished with others to end soon. We have accomplished a great deal this year, including a lot of work on the restoration of the Norseman, the Dageling Glider, the Tiger Moth, and some work on engines for display and for use. We’re got the library in shape, and work is well under way on programs to assist in records keeping for the museum library, archives, artifacts, stock and other data management.

MANNEQUINS AND UNIFORMS

CMFT HAS A GOOD COLLECTION OF UNIFORMS, ALTHOUGH WE STILL DO NOT HAVE ITEMS SUCH AS SHIRTS, TIES, SHOES, UNDERWEAP, SOCKS AND THE SMALL ITEMS MAKING UP THE PERSONAL MESS KITS. AND, TROUSERS ARE HARD TO FIND. WE ALSO NEED MANEQUINS ON WHICH TO DISPLAY THESE UNIFORMS. THEY NEED NOT BE IN PERFECT CONDITION. WE’LL FIX. WHILE WE PREFER FULL LENGTH MANEQUINS, TOP HALVES CAN BE USED AND ARE WELCOME.

ADVERTISE IN THE NEWSLETTER AND HELP CMFT

We’ll print your business card or a space with your name and pledge of support for $10 ($30 for a half page or $60 full).

ABBOTSFORD AIRSHOW ’84

CMFT will again be participating at the Abbotsford Air Show. Plans are to display the Tiger Moth and the Norseman on the tarmac along with the Fleet Finch, the Waco, and the S.E.5a between flying dis- plays. Selected other aircraft owned by members may also be included.

We will have the usual sales booth of- fering souvenirs, hats, T shirts, etc. This airshow is one of the most important fund-raising events of the year and requires the full support of the member- ship to make this event a success. Help is needed to get the airplanes and display booths ready, to transport and erect at the airport, and to dismantle and haul back to the storage site. The airplanes must be at Abbotsford on Wednesday and the booth no later than Thursday. Teardown Sunday evening.

In the past, we have attempted to obtain passes for the participants, but getting the passes to people and organ- izing this has proven to be a big problem and no promises as to passes are being made. We will try to get passes for the few people who help set up the display, and work at least one full day at the airshow. We need lots of help at the air show, mostly for information and security, as well as experienced sales people. Phone in your offer to help so that a schedule can be drawn up.

GIFT SHOP SUPPORT

CMFT HAS A SUPERB SELECTION OF AVIATION BOOKS, MANY OF WHICH ARE OUT OF PRINT AND VERY HARD TO GET, POSTERS, TEE SHIRTS, CHINA AND ALL KINDS OF AVIATION RELATED MATERIALS, INCLUDING RCAF MEMORABILIA FOR SALE. Your purchases in the Gift Shop generate a profit for the museum, which is used in its entirety for restoration and procurement of artifacts.

TOUR GUIDES NEEDED FOR WEEK- END TOURS

A good deal of interest in the CMFT has been generated by the Open House and visitors want to visit the storage site on weekends. The site is open from 11 to 3:00 every Sat. and Sun. Tour guides are needed. Signs describing the airplanes, and a corresponding printed sheet for dis- tribution is being prepared. We are still trying to persuade Jerry Vernon to tape one of his famous tours to make it easier yet. We will be open through October 28, and it takes two guides plus one person in the gift shop, or 6 people per weekend. Hours are from 11 to 3 pm. PLEASE OFFER YOUR HELP!

ALBERTA AIR SHOW

We’ll be taking a display/sales booth to the Alberta Air Show Aug. 4th and 5th. Current plans call for the borrowing (yet again) Mr. Mairs’ van and one more veh- icle, preferably a station wagon or van, and four people to do it all. If you’d like to help, and we would like your help, please offer your van or yourself. Soon.

3RD ANNUAL OPEN HOUSE SUPER SUCCESS

This year’s “OPEN HOUSE” was by far the “best yet”. Held June 23 and 24th, the two day event attracted about 12,000 people. The weather co-operated, the many organizations whose participation was necessary for success all came through with flying colours, and our own volunteers somehow managed to get the huge task of cleaning up the yard, tidying up the buildings, arranging for and preparing the food, parking, traffic, and the many other details that are necessary to make an event of this magnitude go.

To all of you who helped in the preparatory work, especially, a warm thank you. Thanks also to those of you who spent the entire day working frantically trying to keep up with the work and didn’t even get the opportunity to view the exhibits and watch the events.

The people in the food concession had an especially difficult job, and parking took a great deal of effort. WELL DONE! –

Highlights of the event were, in addition to our own collection being on display (including the Waco and the SES), were the dozens of vintage cars provided by the Vintage Car Club, the rare antique and vintage motorcycles provided by Trev Deeley and Dave Mitchell, restored. Indian motorcyles from the “Laughing Indian Riders” motorcyle club with their beautiful “Indians”, the fire truck provided by the Transportation Collection, and of course the hot air balloon rides provided by Pegasus Ballooning Ltd. Everybody loved the parachute “drop-in” and we thank the Pacific Skydivers Parachute Club for helping to make these two days memorable.

The Riverside Flyers, the Radio Controlled Flying Club of B.C., the B.C. Society of Model Engineers, the Valley Boat Club, and others brought out their model airplanes, boats and locomotives, which were all very popular exhibits. The boat club operated their ships in the pond to the delight of visitors.

Thanks to the Western Warbirds, The Swift Birds, and the “mystery” Fairchild 24 who did Flypasts for us. The flypasts were a special feature of the day.

Information on various aviation oriented non-profit organizations was available.

This year’s production of the WWI dogfight skit included the conquering hero “Snoopy” and as usual made headlines.

The Sunday evening barbecue was attended by 120 people, and all in all, we can all be very proud of the event.

Admission was free, with those wishing to donate being allowed to do so. The funds generated by the food booth, Wilma’s popular tee-shirt booth, the gift shop and donations will allow us to carry on with the Norseman restoration for a short while longer and provided the necessary funds to lay in the stock for the Alberta and Abbotsford Air Shows.

NORSEMAN RESTORATION

We have asked Austin Airways and the former owner Jack Austin to fund the cost of the very expensive original Austin Air- ways color scheme of Red and Black on Nor- seman CFBSC, but have had no reply to date. If you would like to see this airplane in its authentic original colors, your donation of the cost of approximately $1,500. would be welcomed. Alternatively, it will be painted in the standard Norse- man civilian colors of yellow with red, green or black trim. Cost about the same.

STILL NEEDED TO COMPLETE THE RESTORATION of the Norseman are: Brakes (the complete wheel units), 30″ wheels and tires, an oil tank, instruments, seats, propellor and experienced labour.

CMFT IS LOOKING FOR PEOPLE TO “BUY IN” AND MAKE THE PURCHASE OF A LARGE TRACT OF LAND POSSIBLE. IF YOU HAVE SOME MONEY TO INVEST IN LAND, LETS TALK IT OVER.

VOLUNTEER INVOLVEMENT

CMFT’s success to date is due to the unstinting assistance of volunteers. We need you more than ever. Please offer your help. The majority of volunteers are unskilled at restoration, but want to become involved, and need someone with experience to show them how. We ask that you offer your help in the many other areas where help is needed, especially in general “handy andy” work such as sorting, cataloging and moving parts, and preservation work.

CMFT expects to be relocated from the Crescent Road storage site within 3 years, necessitating a great deal of work. Give us a hand. Workbees every Sat. & Sun. 9-3 Those of you who prefer desk work, there is always work to do in the library, the office, with the growing photo collection, and a steady job looking after member- ships. Phone Rose for a warm welcome.

CMFT OPEN HOUSE AN UNPRECEDENTED SUCCESS

NEARLY 12,000 VISITORS visited the CMFT “OPEN HOUSE on June 23 and 24th. Several of the dozens of restored Vintage cars that were on hand are displayed alongside CMFT’s Tiger Moth. The tail of the salvaged Stranraer can be seen just above the Howard DGA15P wingtip, and to the left of the T33 jet trainer.

We’ll be doing it all again on SATURDAY, AUGUST 18TH. If you missed the June 23 & 24 dates, plan to come. Bring your friends or invite them to attend.
