BEHIND THE SCENES The storage sheds, shop and yard are visible and the work that goes on there is very important to the growth and well being of CMFT, but the real backbone is the day to day operation of keeping track of it all and co-ordinating events such as the Open House. Work is done in what used to be an ordinary private home, which is steadily being converted to offices, gift shop, library and other related uses. In cramped and chaotic conditions, volunteers and short-term employees carry out the many jobs necessary for the success and growth of CMFT. Computers figure prominently in the work, and a great deal is accomplished in spite of a very limited budget. We welcome volunteers to do any and all tasks. If you wish to help out but aren’t interested in aircraft, there is always something to do in the office and Library. Please join us. CANADIAN MUSEUM OF FLIGHT AND TRANSPORTATION 13527 Crescent Road Surrey, B.C. Canada V4A 2W1 (604) 531-2465 WELCOME The Canadian Museum of Flight and Transportation is an all-volunteer, non- profit society, established in 1977, as a result of a deep concern to preserve Canada’s aviation history. The CMFT is dedicated to building a living museum of transportation dis- plays, with regular flying exhibition, in a park like setting with something of interest to all. CMFT is successful because of the support and effort of its 1500 volun- teers. With the exception of short term project grants from Employment and Immigration Canada, CMFT is entirely self-supporting. Funds for restorations and operation of the museum are raised through sales of gift shop items at air shows, shopping centre displays, and displays such as this Open House. CMFT has one of Canada’s larges collections of aircraft, including bi- planes, bushplanes, helicopters, gliders, military aircraft and others. A few of these are fully restored and fly regularly, others are in the process of restoration, but the majority are awaiting restoration. Also on hand is a collection of uniforms, small artifacts, photos, etc. A comprehensive re- search library is available to the public. Lack of a permanent home the present is a temporary storage site only – has been a major drawback to growth. A study, funded by the Ministry of Industry and Small Business to target a site and the means of establishing a world class complex to include the CMFT collection and a number of other transportation oriented collections in the area, is now complete, and word will be released shortly about the outcome. An important and exciting project, “Pioneer Profiles”, is underway to record on video and audio tape the recollections of aviation pioneers. The material collected is destined for use in making radio and television documen- taries, and for future publications. We at CMFT invite you to become involved. Join the dedicated volunteers who help make it all happen and are responsible for its continued gruath. Expertise of all kinds is needed, from fund raising to promotion, to restor- ations to yard maintenance, office and administration, tour guide and gift shop staffing, and help with special events such as Open House and Air Shows. If you would like to help but lack the time or if travel is a problem, we’d be pleased to have you as a supportive member. Fees are $20 per year (General Membership), $12 (Juniors under 18), $30 (Family), $300 (Lifetime) and $100 (Corporate). Membership includes free admission to the museum and a subscrip- tion to the Museum Newsletter. Lifetime and Corporate memberships are eligible for tax-deductible receipts. Enjoy your day! page 5

ADOPT AN AIRPLANE Exhibit airplanes require constant atten- tion to maintain in display condition. The biggest need is simply to keep them clean – washing, window cleaning, detail main- tenance, etc. It costs you nothing but time to adopt an airplane. All materials are supplied, but the volunteer help is desperately needed. A sign acknowledging your help will be displayed if you make a serious committ- ment to a certain aircraft. Phone in and tell us which airplane you would like to “adopt” and when you are available to work. We’ll organize “teams” for each aircraft. If you can’t come out, but would still like to help, a small donation to help buy soap, cleaning material, brushes, etc. would be much appreciated. Tax deductible receipts are available on request. STRANRAER PRINTS We still have some copies of the Graham Wragg print of Stranraer RCAF 915. This is a beautiful fine art print, with a printed matt ready for framing. Prints are $15.00 each, plus $3.00 for mailing, or pick yours up at the gift shop. We also have sets of greeting cards with the print on the cover, sold in packages of 6 with envelopes for $2.95. The print makes a perfect gift, and remember that proceeds from sales go towards restoration and display of museum aircraft.Get yours today! WHAT IS THE MUSEUM? With so many new members joining every week, we are always asked “How did all this start, and why?” For those who may not know, and to refresh the memory of those who do, here is a condensed version. In the early 1970’s, a group of aviation enthusiasts made a move to stop the exodus of historic aircraft leaving Canada for the U.S. and Europe. Many of these were removed by speculators, who acquired air- craft for little or no money; then sold them out of the country for huge profits. A group consisting of G. Barry Jackson Ron Stunden, Bill Thompson and Ed & Rose Zalesky pooled their resources to acquire as many of these aircraft as possible, trying to stop this mass export of an important part of Canada’s history. With the collection growing rapidly, and public awareness increasing, The Canadian Museum of Flight and Transportation (CMFT) was incorporated as a non-profit society in March, 1977, and empowered by the Fed- eral Government to issue tax-deductible receipts for donations. With this move, CMFT’s credibility was confirmed, and public interest increased dramatically. With a serious museum group now estab- lished in B.C., donations – large and small as well as cash and memberships became more frequent. Through the hard work and perseverence of many dedicated people, CMFT now ranks as one of Canada’s largest aviation museum collections. With over 40 aircraft some in flying condition, others derelict and a membership of over 1300, CMFT has the distinction of being entirely self-sup- porting, one of the feu museums in Canada to claim that status. The museum has come much farther than any of the founders had ever imagined. The original goal of CMFT was to preserve our heritage for future generations, and to help promote a greater pride and under- standing of an important part of Canada’s history. This has not changed, and in fact we are seeing more and more of this goal realized with each passing year. CMFT is now undertaking efforts to obtain a permanent home for the collection. The intention is to have a family oriented complex which would include other trans- portation related museum groups from the lower mainland, most of whom, like CMFT, also lack a permanent facility. Unlike most museums of today, this complex will have working displays, where the public can get involved, and will be a major tourist attraction which we, as well as future generations, can all be proud of. Many times we have been asked why we work so hard to see this dream become a real- ity. For all of those involved, it can be summed up by one of the Directors: “When , you see a 75 year old man who flew one of these birds many years ago showing the airplane to his 5 year old great-grandson – the pride in his eyes, and the smile on the kids face that’s what makes it all worth while.” LODESTAR ‘TCY In our last newsletter we reported that CMFT had purchased ex-Trans Canada Airlines Lodestar CF-TCY from a museum in the Central U.S. Plans are to haul the aircraft to the CMFT site and restore it in the original TCA markings. We believe it is one of the last remaining TCA Lodestars in existance. We are happy to report that funds have been building since the last newsletter for its restoration, thanks in large part to many ex-TCA employees. We still need a great deal more, and appeals are being made to Air Canada and other corporations in addition to private sponsorship to help raise the funds needed. Remember, donations are eligible for a tax-deductible receipt. If you have a soft spot for this aircraft, then please do your part to help get TCY on display as soon as possible. page 8

REMEMBER US FROM EXPO? On the site today you will find all four of the aircraft that the CMFT had on dis- play at Expo 86. The Westland Lysander, covered in the clear Tedlar coating rather than conven- tional fabric, was the focal point at the Air Plaza. The multi-colored Quickie was dwarfed beneath the Boeing 747 nose section along with two other aircraft. Noorduyn Norseman CF-BSC, the famous black and red bush aircraft, was slso on display at the Air Plaza. Last, but not least, is the Stampe bi- plane, which was restored on-site at the fair using 20,000 hours of volunteer la- bour. It now carries the colors of Expo on its tail. Watch for each of these aircraft on the site, and see if you remember them from last year’s World’s Fair. HISTORIC TRANSPORTATION CENTRE When the lease expired on the Provincial Truck Collection’s location in Richmond and a new site was needed, the result was the newly opened Historic Transportation Centre in Cloverdale. Displays consist of vintage transportation items including trucks, cars, buses, Expo 85 items, and last but not least, two of CMFT’s own aircraft. Our Waco INF and Bowlus Bumble- bee are now on display at the complex as well. Check elsewhere in the program for further information. Bus: (604) 580-6252 M. & A. Installations Ltd.
